Transgress
To break the rules or cross the line. Juliet does this when she refuses to marry Paris, against her father’s wishes.
Foreboding
A feeling that something bad will happen. Romeo feels this ahead of going to the Capulet ball, when he says he fears “some consequence yet hanging in the stars.”
Hierarchy
Organising people based on their importance. The Prince is at the top of this in Verona, followed by the heads of the Capulet and Montague families, who expect all their family members to follow their orders.
The nature of love
The debate about what love should be- courtly and ideal or physical and real
Parents and young people
The conflict between the expectations of parents who are more experienced, and the passionate desire of young people
Fate and free will
The debate about whether we control our lives, or whether a higher power such as God, society or Fate controls us
Violence and conflict
The idea that violence creates a cycle of more violence and needs to be controlled
Adolescence
The passionate feeling that young people have, and the conflicts these can cause
Masculinity
The expectation that men must be strong, know how to fight, and defend their honour
The role of women
The expectation that women must submit to men, and coontent as wives and mothers
Impulsive
Acting suddenly, without thinking first. Romeo rushes into love with Juliet, and she advises him that it is “too rash, to unadvised, too sudden.”
Idealistic
Aiming for perfection, not realistic. Romeo is like this when he describes Juliet as a ‘goddess’ and a ‘bright angel’
Paternal
Acting like a father. Friar Lawrence tries to be like this when he gives Romeo advice about not rushing into marrying Juliet.
Misogynistic
Treating women disrespectfully. Lord Capulet behaves in this way when he tells Juliet to ‘die in the streets’ because she won’t marry Paris.
Well-intentioned
Trying to do good. Friar Lawrence is like this when he suggests that marrying might bring the feud between the two families to an end.
