Romeo And Juliet Flashcards
Prologue: star crossed lovers. Themes- love, resolve, tragedy. Techniques- foreshadowing, metaphor
Foreshadows that their love was not meant to be. They are 2 stars who meet ,for a brief period, and continue to move far away from each other. Their love was brief and served purpose to unite their families, not serve themselves and they are separated by death. They are sacrificial.
1,1: Romeo- Love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, sick and healthy, asleep and awake….it is everything except what it is! Themes- deception, love, selfishness. Techniques- juxtaposition, metaphor, personification
This quote summarises the play, everything is not what it seems. Shows love itself is an oxymoron that betrays and deceives you. Not just between r and j but between the love every character has for each other. Showing their love for each other is fake. Questioning the love we have for each other or weather we simply just seek personal gain.
2,1: Romeo- But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east and Juliet is the Sun. Themes- obsession, hope, tragedy. Techniques- foreshadowing, imagery, metaphor
Portrays Juliet as the sunlight, distracting Romeo from his problems and offering hope. Also shows Romeo’s obsession with Juliet from the very beginning. Juliet is Romeo’s light and without her, it’s dark and he’s lost. Metaphor foreshadows their tragic ending as their relationship will be short and tragic- just like the Sun quickly rises but soon sets
2,2: Juliet- That which we call a rose, by any other word would smell as sweet.
Play on words with Rosaline. Much like his relationship with Rosaline, r and j’s relationship will end in pain. By likening the girls to a rose- it shows that they’re (Romeo’s lust) beautiful but have thorns that will hurt Romeo as he gets closer. Foreshadowing the tragic ending.
2,2: Juliet- Deny thy father and use thy name. Themes: disloyalty, impulse, love. Techniques- links to 2,6 quote
States that Romeo and Juliet are nothing without their family names but the fact that they are willing to so quickly deny their names shows they have weak bonds and are impulsive, making the reader question whether they would do the same against each other.
2,3: friar- For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your houeholds’ rancour to pure love. Themes- hope, sacrifice. Techniques- juxtaposition, symbolism, foreshadowing
Shows that their love symbolises hope but also sacrifice. Romeo are sacrificial lambs. Showing juxtaposition as they must die to end the families’ feud. Showing a lack of individualism in Roman Catholic renaissance society and an emphasis on family loyalty and honour.
2,6: friar- These violent delights have violent ends. Themes: quickness, chaos, tragedy. Techniques- repetition, juxtaposition, foreshadowing
Violent delights- represents R and J’s impulsive love as a quick reaction. It may be sweet and romantic but foreshadows that it only lasts a short, juxtaposing that love should be evergreen as it normally is. Violent ends- Foreshadows their chaotic, tragic ends. Juxtaposition that something so quick and fast can lead to such massive ramifications. Repetition of violent- violent has 2 different contexts but shows how dangerous their love is. Foreshadowing the turning point in act 3.
3,1: mercutio- A plague o’both your houses. Themes: turning point, catalyst, tragedy. Techniques: foreshadowing,
This quote is a catalyst as from here, the play shifts from Rom-Com to Tragedy. The chaos caused with now spread like a plague to everyone involved, ending any chance of a peaceful resolve as Romeo and Juliet’s love is cursed.
3,5: capulet- Hang thee, young baggage! Disobedient wretch! I tell thee what…get thee to church a’Thursday or never after look me in the face! Themes- patriarchy, wealth, power, disobedience, coldness. Techniques- juxtaposition,
Shows capulet is a changed man, from telling Paris to “wait 2 more summers” to forcing his daughter to marry him on his command. Shows Capulet as a victim of the patriarchal society and wealth of the time as their is an expectation on him and his family to hold up the reputation he has fostered and force his daughter into political marriages, also showing he sees Juliet as business, a means to become more influential.
5,1: Romeo- I defy you stars. Themes- fate, god, futility. Techniques- links back to prologue
Stars- symbolises God, destiny, nature. Romeo is trying to defy fate, his vision is blurred by his infatuation and love and believes he himself is God. This is futile as Romeo is not as powerful as he thinks and his fate has been written from the very start and can’t be changed.
