Many Americans believed in the term of Manifest Destiny which was the right to settle American’s lands across the continent. in 1840 most Americans lived in the Appalachian Mountains. Western expansion inspired an up-spring of national pride and self awareness.

a result of westward expansion led to tribal lands and relocation of more than 100,00 Native Americans. 1838 ‘trail of tears’, thousands of Cherokee perished, where the promise of freedom from white settlement would last for only 15 years
