- Purpose is to instruct and entertain
- Characters are MORE important than plot
- Realists rejects symbolism and romanticizing objects
- Plot emphasizes on the norm of daily experience and real life experience
- Characters are ordinary (no hero), but they are often complex and face ethical choices
- Social class is important
- Diction is direct, not poetic

- Movement in art, litterature and music during end of 18th century (end of 1700) up to 1870 in England and 1830-1860 in America

1- Imagination: over reason & considered necessary for creating all art
2- Intuitition: feelings + instincts over reason
3- Idealism: concept that you can make the world a better place, simplier past.
4- Inspiration: inspired creator. Reject of religion. Country life = popular and supernatural too.
5- Individuality: this over society + beginning of women’s right movement!

Subgenre that looks more on self destruction and the proneness for people to sin.
Focuses on supernatural + gothic themes.
