Romanian Orphan Studies Flashcards
Outline Rutters Study
-Studied the impacts of institutionalisation on 165 Romanian orphans compared to a control group of 52 British kids adopted within the U.K.
-He studied their physical, emotional, and mental growth at the ages of 4,6,11,14,22-25
Findings of Rutters Study
-IQ of children adopted before 6 months was 102, 82 for those adopted between 6 months and 2 years, and 72 for those adopted after 2 years.
-Children who were adopted after the age of 2 showed disinhibited attachment.
He theorised that this was because they had multiple carers in poor-quality institutions, where their interactions with carers weren’t long enough to form an emotional and intellectual attachment.
-Kids who arrived in the U.K. showed intellectual disability.
-These changes could be reversed if they were dealt with at the age of attachment
What is disinhibited attachment?
Attachment type was discovered by Rutter whereby children showed attention-seeking behaviours, showed no stranger or separation anxiety, and were friendly with all adults eg, would sit on the lap of random adults.
