Romanian Orphan Studies Flashcards
How many children were placed in state-operated orphanages in Romania?
100,000
What was the aim of Rutter and Songua-Barkes study?
To examine the long term effects of institutionalisation in a long term study beginning in the early 1990s
What was the method of Rutter and Songua- Barke?
165 children who has spent their life in a Romanian orphanage, 111 adopted before age of 2, remaining 54 adopted by 4. Compared to control group of 52 British children adopted before 6 months.
Cognitive, social, and physical development was measured at intervals by adoptive parents and teachers
What were the results of Songua-Barke?
At point of adoption, Romanian orphans had delayed developments. However almost all adopted before 6 months caught up on development. Those adopted after 6 months continued to show significant deficits.
What was the conclusion of Songua-Barke?
Institutionalisation has long term effects on development.
What was the aim of Bucharest early intervention?
To investigate the type of children who has spent most of their life in institutionalisation care
What was the procedure of Bucharest early intervention?
A sample of almost all one hundred between 12-31 month, 90% of who had spent most their life in an orphanage. Compared to control group who had never been institutionalised, they assessed their attachment types compared to their behaviours.
What were the findings of Zeenah et al?
Found that almost 3/4 of control group were securely attached to their caregivers, conversely 1/5 of experimental group had secure attachment, 2/3 had a disinhibited attachment.
Those without the emotional care are less likely to have a secure attachment.
What were the brief evaluation points from research into institutionalisation?
- Real world application
- Longitudinal research
-Ignores other factors of development
