reflexive and reciprocal first person pronoun
Reflexive pronouns refer back to the subject of a sentence when the subject and the object are the same. In first person, these are:
- Singular: myself
- Plural: ourselves
Examples:
- I taught myself to play the guitar.
(The subject “I” is also the person doing the learning.)
-
We treated ourselves to a fancy dinner.
(The subject “we” is also the group that received the treatment.)
- Reciprocal Pronouns in First Person
Reciprocal actions involve two or more people doing something to or for each other. In English, reciprocal actions are usually expressed with phrases like “each other” or “one another.”
For first-person reciprocal actions, the construction is typically:
- each other or one another
Examples:
- We text each other every day.
(The two or more people represented by “we” are exchanging texts.)
-
We helped one another with the project.
(Each person in the group is helping the others.)
Key Points
- Reflexive Pronouns (myself, ourselves): used when the subject is acting on itself.
- Reciprocal Pronouns (each other, one another): used when the action is mutual between two or more subjects.
So, reflexive pronouns are used for actions done to oneself, while reciprocal pronouns express actions done between multiple people.
