Literary Epic
A long narrative in verse form that retells the heroic journey of a person. It has stylized language, and fabulous adventures.
Invocation to the Muse
An appeal made by a poet to someone (sometimes a god) for inspiration in their writing.
Epic Hero
Elevated status, traveler, unmatched warrior, demonstrator of humility, and courageous.
Myth
A traditional story that explains some phenomenon and typically involving supernatural beings or events.
Imagery
Visually descriptive language
Apostrophe
A speech or a dress to someone who isn’t there.
Foreshadowing
A warning or indication of a future event.
Irony
An expression that signifies the opposite of what’s true, typically for humorous effect.
Dactylic Hexameter
The meter used in epics
Realism
The attempt to represent a subject matter truthfully
