-intervention in Bosnia (1995) and Kosovo (1999) put an end to genocide and ethnic cleansing
-NATO intervention in Libya (2011) allowed rebel forces to assassinate Gaddaffi leading to civil war and now failed state

Effectiveness of ICJ
-advisory opinions shaping international politics eg. 2010 ICJ ruling that kosovos declaration of independance didn’t breach law, leading Kosovo to campaign for state recognition
-excludes range of humanitarian issues by not being involved with non state actors
-lacks enforcement powers. After ICJ rules in favour of Nicuragua (1986) USA says the court has no jurisdiction.
