Women in Weimar
A
- theoretically equal but not in practice
- 1919 - Article 109 - men and women have same fundamental rights (right to vote and to hold office)
- proportion of women who had jobs remained about the same as before the war
- started working in male dominated jobs
- 1920s - ‘new women’ - cut hair short wore short right skirts, and acted with the freedom of a man taking advantage on contraception and smoking
- women subjugated to sexism at work and trade unions dominated by men
- some German women never fully embraced the “new woman” and held traditional views about their place in society, criticizing younger women
- men took back these jobs when they returned from the war
- depression - increased hostility towards women, hit by unemployment but women suffered less as they were cheaper to employ

Women in Nazi Germany
A
- KInder, Kuche, Kirche
- Special status and responsibility for the Volksgemeinschaft, or “national community”
- 1938 - created the German Mother’s Cross, prizes given to mothers who had had four or more children
- members of the SS encouraged to mate with women from BDM
- married women lost jobs, and single women excluded from higher levels of work
- women encouraged to work during the war, small increase in German women working; many reluctant to work and employers sent them back home, they took up different jobs(teachers), foreign labour now available
- ended up joining armed forces

- radical women targeted paragraph 218 and abortion rights
- theoretically equal but in practice not
- Ardenaur made speeches about the importance of women working but did nothing to put it into place
traditional role in West Germany, whilst in East Germany women had to take jobs as they needed the extra incone to survive whilst WG women were given tax breaks
