Give the definition, examples, and role of public services.
Definition: state service providers at a local or national level
Examples: NHS, schools
Role: to ensure a standard of healthcare, education and amenities are available to all citizens.
What is the definition of pressure groups
Groups of people who work and campaign together on a specific issue to bring about change or maintain the current situation
4 types of pressure groups
Single cause: focus on a single issue
Multi cause: range of issues
Protective: protect the interests of their members
Promotional: promote their views on a particular topic
Groups can be classified by their status:
Insider status ~> implies that the group is able to discuss with meet and is consulted by those it wishes to influence
Outsider status ~> implies the group doesn’t have direct access to those making decisions and is not consulted or directly involved in discussions. Don’t want to be part of the ‘system’ of talks and negotiations.
Give the definition, examples and role of trade unions
Definition: organisations that represent groups of workers in terms of pay and conditions, members from the same job sector pay to join them
Examples: National union or rail, maritime and transport workers (RMT), through TUC
Role: provide a voice for and support their members
Defintion, examples, and role of charities
Definition: organisations that are given a legal status and sometimes government taxation benefits to represent an otherwise an represented section of society
Examples: NSPCC, RSPCA
Role: give help to groups in society who were otherwise left unaided (over a hundred years ago)
Definition, examples and role of voluntary groups
Definition: may or may not be registered charities, involved people working individually or collectively to provide a service to others
Examples: helping children read in the library
Role: run locally or nationally, don’t directly campaign but promote the service of a distance they provide
