Role Of Neurotransmitters Flashcards
1
Q
Synapse
A
The synapse is the site where communication between adjacent neurons occurs.
2
Q
Neurotransmitters
A
A chemical substance provided by a neuron that carries a message to other neurons or cells in muscles, glands or other tissue.
3
Q
Excitatory effect
A
Stimulate or active the postsysnaptic neurons to perform their functions. Eg glutamate
4
Q
Inhibitory effect
A
Block or prevent postsynaptic neurons from firing eg GABA
5
Q
Lock-and-key process
A
The neurotransmitter is a distinctly shaped key and the receptor site is the lock and only accepts specific shaped neurotransmitters which binding unlocks causing change in the neuron.
