Role of Mucus in the Lungs Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the normal features of mucus within the lungs.
A
Usually, the airways within the lungs are coated in a thin layer of mucus.
2
Q
What is the function of mucus within the airways?
A
- It traps dust, debris and micro-organisms and ensures they do not enter the body.
- The mucus is either coughed out or swallowed (where the stomach kills the bacteria) and reduces the risk of infection.
3
Q
What is the function of the goblet cells?
A
To produce and secrete mucus.
4
Q
What are the features of a CF patient’s mucus?
A
- It is thick and sticky because it contains less water
- The cilia cannot move it as easily
- The mucus increases the chances of lung infections and makes gas exchange less efficient.
