What is government
An institution with the power to make and enforce rules for a group of people

Monarchies, Republic, and Dictatorship
Monarchy
Head of state is a hereditary position as King or Queen
Feudalism
Political system based on rule of local lords tied to monarchy by loyalty, if their power is reduced absolute monarchy occurs
Absolute monarchy
King or queen has almost complete power
Constitutional monarchy
Monarch is primarily a ceremonial head of state and has no real power
Republic
Authority comes from people
Classical republic
Also called Direct Democracy, all adults are allowed to participate in government decisions
Democracy
Rule by the people
Citizens have authority by voting, expressing views, and political groups
Constitutional monarchies can also have democratic system
Dictatorship
Power is located in a single person or small group of people
Autocracy and Oligarchy
A- rule by one
O- rule by a few
Authoritarian and totalitarian
A- dictators answer only to themselves, use force to achieve power
T- dictator seeks complete control of all aspects of citizens lives
Unitary government
Central government tho lads all the power with no local authority, used in Great Britain
Federal government
National, state, and local governments share power, used in U.S.
Confederal government
Independent states join together to carry out a common policy, used in European Union
Presidential power
Legislative and executive are separate, U.S. and France
Parliamentary power
President of premier are chosen by legislature, Great Britain
