stage 1 get to know each other, establish a health marriage, fit into new family system, renegotiate relationships and roles in family; stage 2 with infant < 30 mon, accept new member, adjust marriage r/t lack of intimacy, realign relationships with extended family; stage 3 child 2.5-5 yo, socialize; safety; maintain healthy relationship within family and social; stage 4 child 6-13 yo support in school achievement; safety; meet physical needs of all family members; stage 5 child 13-20 allow independence; refocus martial status r/t teen stress; open communication between parent and teen; listen to both sides; when was the last time you had drugs; stage 6 LAUNCHING of 1st child and last child almost out; lots exits and entries; renegotiate marriage as focus; stage 7 middle age with last child leaving, accept shift of generational roles, provide health promoting environment, sustain new relationship if spouse had died; stage 8 later life retirement or both dead; accept limitations and death, if one alive maintain satisfying living arrangement r/t fixed income, adjust to loss of spouse and income
