I had a nonverbal client whose behaviors mostly consisted of stereotypy and oral SSB (with no function). One day he was crying hard, with tears running down his face. His mom insisted he was crying to escape me/my demands (he had never cried as escape for me). I asked him if something hurt and he touched his neck. I explained to mom that while yes, it could be a behavior, we should get his neck checked out first to make sure it is not something medically wrong.
