Rocks and Soil Flashcards
Learn about rocks, their formations and the Earth's soil.
Geology
The study of the Earth’s physical structure.
Geologic Formations
Volcanoes, Canyons, Mountains
Rocks
Made up of minerals.
Minerals
Naturally occurring chemicals.
Igneous Rocks
Rocks formed from molten rock (magma).
Sedimentary Rocks
Layered, weathered and eroded rock developed over millions of years.
Fossils
Formed by plants and animals and found in sedimentary rocks.
Metamorphic Rocks
Rocks that are changed by heat and pressure overtime formed deep within the Earth’s surface.
Physical Weathering
The breaking down of rocks due to water, wind and temperatures.
Chemical Weathering
Minerals dissolving as a result of chemical reactions.
Erosion
Worn-down bits of rock that are transported around Earth by wind, water and gravity.
Deposition
Layers of built up sediment.
Soil
Upper layer of the Earth that contains life.
Inorganic Matter
Anything that is not living, such as fossils or rocks.
Organic Matter
Anything that is living, such as worms or plants.
