Rocks And Erosions / weathering Flashcards
What is a sedimentary rock
Sedimentary rock is formed when layers of small sediment from rock under pressure such as water in the rivers they are soft and wet down easily and example of it is a slate that can be found in northern Scotland
What is A metamorphic rock
They are rocks that are melted together underground because of lots of pressure there are different colours they’re very hard and example of a metamorphic rock is a marble they can be found in northern Belfast
What are igneous rocks
They are malted rockstar cools down and hardens it happens gradually underground ignore rocks a hard type of rocks they are found in northern Dublin
Write a definition of the 4 erosions
Hydraulic: Water hitting a rock causes it to get trapped in cracks the pressure we can still rock and where is it down. Abrasion: Stones and rocks and moved around in water they can hit and scraper rock surface like Stones and rocks are moved around in water they can hit and scrape a rock surface like sandpaper. Attrition: rocks and stones knock against each other wearing each other down. Solution: overtime water dissolves the surface of the rock
What is biological weathering
Burrowing animals can borrow into a rock and crack a plant roots can grow in the cracks in rocks making the crack bigger
What is chemical weathering
Rainwater slightly acidic minerals and rocks can react with the rainwater causing them to break down
What is mechanical weathering
Water gets into cracks in rocks and freezers when water freezes it expands which makes the clock wider over time we can split a rock
