Rocks And Building Materials Flashcards
What do we mix with limestone to make cement and then concrete?
We heat limestone with clay to make cement, we then take the cement powder and mix it with sand, water and crushed rock to make concrete
What is limestone mainly made up of?
Limestone is a rock mainly formed from calcium carbonate, some types of limestone were formed from the remains of dead plants and animals
What is thermal decomposition?
It is the breaking down of chemicals using heating
How do we make lots of calcium oxide in a line kiln?
We fill the kiln with crushed limestone powder and heat it with bursts of hot air. Calcium oxide then comes out of the bottom of the kiln and the waste gases including carbon dioxide leave the kiln at the top
What is the advantage of using a rotary kiln over a regular kiln?
Rotary kilns thoroughly mix limestone with the hot air and makes sure it is fully decomposed
What happens when a carbonate reacts with acids
It will produce a salt, water and carbon dioxide
Give the general word equation for a carbonate plus an acid
Carbonate + acid»_space; salt + H2O + Co2
Give a general word equation for the thermal decomposition of a carbonate
Carbonate + heat»_space; metal oxide + Co2
What is the word equation for the reaction of sodium carbonate with dilute hydrochloride acid
Sodium carbonate + hydrochloride acid»_space; Sodium chloride + H2O + Co2
What happens when we add water to calcium oxide
It produces calcium hydroxide
How do we get limewater from calcium hydroxide
We must add more water and then filter the solution
Produce a flow diagram of the limestone reaction cycle

How is mortar made?
By adding sand and water to calcium hydroxide
