Rocks Flashcards
Rock definition
A rock is a naturally occurring, multi-granular aggregate of minerals, and consists of fragments of one or more kinds of mineral.
What are the three different types of rocks?
- Igneous
- Sedimentary
- Metamorphic
Igneous Rock
Rocks that from by crystallization of melted rock material known as magma
-Consist of interlocking crystals of various minerals.
Sedimentary Rock
Rocks formed at earths surface by lithification of weathering products of pre-existing igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rocks.
Metamorphic Rock
Rocks that were originally igneous or sedimentary but as a direct result of heat and pressure have changed in texture or mineral composition or both. Not undergone melting.
Monomineralic rocls
Consists of aggregates of a single mineral (Quartzite-Quartz)
