Rocks Flashcards
What is a rock?
A solid mass of mineral or mineral-like matter occurring naturally as part of our planet.
What is an igneous rock
Rock formed by the crystallization of molten magma.
What are sedimentary rocks?
Rocks formed from the weathering products of preexisting rocks that have been transported, deposited, compacted and cemented.
What are metamorphic rock?
Rock formed by the alteration of pre-existing rock deep within the Earth (but still in the solid state) by heat, pressure, and/or chemically active fluids.
Explain the rock cycle
Magma->Lava->Weathering->Sediment
What are the two types of igneous rock?
- Intrusive (formed when magma hardens beneath Earth’s surface)
- Extrusive (formed when lava hardens)
How are igneous Rocks classified?
Texture (grain size) and Composition
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Compaction (squeezes/compacts sediments)
Cementation (disolved minerals fill tiny spaces)
How are sedimentary rocks classified?
- Clastic (composed of weathered bits)
- Classified by partical size
- Exmaples: Shale, Sandstone, Conglomerate
- Chemical (dissolved substances precipitate)
- Examples: limestone, chert, coal, rock salt
How are metamorphic Rocks formed?
- Formed with elevated temperatures and pressures deep under Earth’s surface.
- Contact metamorphism occurs when magma moves into rock.
How are metamophic rocks classified?
Texture (foliated?), grain size, parent rock.
