Q

What are metamorphic rock?

A

Rock formed by the alteration of pre-existing rock deep within the Earth (but still in the solid state) by heat, pressure, and/or chemically active fluids.

Q

What are the two types of igneous rock?

A
  • Intrusive (formed when magma hardens beneath Earth’s surface)
  • Extrusive (formed when lava hardens)

Q

How are sedimentary rocks formed?

A

Compaction (squeezes/compacts sediments)

Q

How are sedimentary rocks classified?

A
  • Clastic (composed of weathered bits)
    • Classified by partical size
    • Exmaples: Shale, Sandstone, Conglomerate
  • Chemical (dissolved substances precipitate)
    • Examples: limestone, chert, coal, rock salt

Q

How are metamorphic Rocks formed?

A
  • Formed with elevated temperatures and pressures deep under Earth’s surface.
  • Contact metamorphism occurs when magma moves into rock.
