Rocks Flashcards
What are the three categories of rocks?
Igneous rock, sedimentary rock, metaphorical rock
What are the two kinds of rock in the igneous category?
Basalt rock and granite rock
How is basalt rocks formed
Lava cools quickly above surface by air
How is granite formed?
Magma cools slowly deep underground
How are limestone rocks formed?
The remains of dead animals or plants
What kind of crystals are found in granite rocks?
Mineral mica
How do plates move?
Molten magma in the earths mantle moves in it circles(convection currents), this makes crustal plates crash together, pull apart and slide past each other
What happens when plates collide?
At some plate boundaries the crust is destroyed, this is a destructive plate boundary, if two plates with land (continental plates) crash ogether th crust crumples upwards making fold mountains and earthquakes
What happens when plates continuously slide past each other ?´
When two plates continuasly slide past each other this is called a transform plate boundary. Usually it causes small earthquakes, it an also cause a destructive earthquake
