Rocks Flashcards
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
These rocks are formed from pre-existing rocks or pieces of once living organisms
How are igneous rocks formed
Formed when hot, molten rock crystallises and solidifies
How are metamorphic rocks are formed
Formed when rocks are subjected to high heat, high pressure, hot mineral rich fluids or, more commonly, some combination of these factors
Igneous rock examples
Granite, basalt and pumice
Sedimentary rock examples
Sandstone, limestone and shale
Metamorphic rock examples
Gneiss, quartzite and marble
Intrusive rock meaning
forms when magma is trapped deep inside the Earth. Great globs of molten rock rise toward the surface
Extrusive rock meaning
produced when magma exits and cools above (or very near) the Earth’s surface. These are the rocks that form at erupting volcanoes and oozing fissures.
Where is granite found
The Wicklow mountains and the mourne mountains
Where is basalt found
Found in the giant’s causeway
How was basalt formed
Formed when the lava spread across the earths surface. The lava cooled and solidified
Where are limestone rocks found
Found in the barren and the central plain of Ireland
How are limestone rocks formed
Formed on the beds of shallow warm seas from skeletons of sea creature fish and shells
Where is sandstone found
Found in the mountains of Munster E.g the Galtees, the comeragh and the magillycuddy reeks
What was Quartzite originally
Originally sandstone
