ROCKS Flashcards
- natural occurring solid mass/aggregate materials
- contains organic materials (ex: fossils, shells, teeth)
- no definite chemical composition
ROCKS
2 or more minerals composed of rock
AGGREGATES
EXAMPLE OF AGGREGATE
(IR) GRANITE COMPOSED OF FELDSPAR, MICA, QUARTZ
3 TYPES OF ROCKS
IGNEOUS, SEDIMENTARY, METAMORPHIC
- from molten rock materials
- can be formed from either magma or lava
- magma solidifies (naninigas)
IGNEOUS ROCKS
PROCESS
- magma cools and crytallizes
CRYSTALLIZATION
2 TYPES OF IGNEOUS ROCKS
INTRUSIVE & EXTRUSIVE
- mabagal ang cooling time
time: thousands of yrs - mabagal lumamig
ex: granite, diorite, pegmatite
INTRUSIVE/PLUTONIC
PLUTO > roman god of the underworld
- mabilis ang cooling time
time: sec to months - nilabas ng lava
- mabilis lumamig
ex: obsidian, basalt, andesite
EXTRUSIVE/VOLCANIC
4 CLASSIFICATION OF IR (CHEMICAL)
FELSIC, ANDESITIC, BASALTIC, ULTRAMAFIC
color: light
dominant minerals: feldspar, quarts, mica
- 65%
FELSIC (GRANITIC)
color: light to grey
DM: felsic, mafic, little or no quartz
- 55% - 65%
INTERMEDIATE (ANDESITIC)
color: grey to black
DM: plagioclase and pyroxene smaller amounts of olivine
- 45% - 55%
BASALTIC
color: black to olive green
DM: olivine and/or pyroxene
- less than 45%
ULTRAMAFIC
4 CLASSIFICATION OF IR (TEXTURE)
COARSE-GRAINED, FINE GRAINED, PORPHYRITIC, GLASSY
- large crystals
ex: granite, diorite, gabbro, peridotite
COARSE-GRAINED
- small crystals
ex: rhyolite, andesite, basalt, komatiite,
FINE GRAINED
- mixed (large embedded in small crystals)
- andesite porphyry and rhyolite porphyry
PORPHYRITIC
- no crystals
ex: pumice
GLASSY
- formed near the surface of the earth
SEDIMENTARY
- broken fragments of rocks
SEDIMENTS
3 TYPES OF SEDIMENTS
CLASTS/DETRITUS
CHEMICAL/DISSOLVED
ORGANIC
- formed from mechanical weathering
ex: conglomerate, shale, sandstone
CLASTS/DETRITUS
- from precipitation
ex: limestone, dolomite, coal, rock salt, chert, hematite
CHEMICAL/DISSOLVED
- formed from the accumulation of plant or animal debris
ex: chalk, coal, lignite
ORGANIC
- compaction & cementation of the sediments
PROCESS: LITHIFICATION
- formed kahit sa anong bato
- came from other/older rocks
-IR or SR - crystalline
METAMORPHIC ROCKS
- to change form
- process of change in the structure, texture, or
composition of rocks caused by agents of heat,
deforming pressure
METAMORPHISM
