Q

How are sedimentary rocks formed?

A

They form when particles of minerals which were eroded form rock in one place get stuck together again in another place, to form new rock

Q

How are igneous rocks formed?

A

This forms when rock melts, then cools and hardens again.

Q

How are metamorphic rocks formed?

A

This is rock which has been changed underground, without melting.

To grow plants and food

soils have lots of nutrients

Q

Silt?

A

Holds water, can be hard to drain; can hold only limited nutrients

Q

sand?

A

Form - lightweight, free-draining soils; can not hold onto nutrients

Animals?

A

Includes insects, bacteria and earthworms; helps to break down dead materials

Q

Air?

A

Fills gaps in soil; allows plant roots and animals to ‘breathe’

Q

Clay?

A

Holds water well; can become heavy and water logged when wet; can hold onto nutrients

Q

Organic matter?

A

Includes manure, leaf mould and compost; releases nutrients slowly as it rots’ improves water holding. Helps stick soil together.

16
Q

Water?

A

Clings to soil particles; is taken up by plant roots

17
Q

What are the 3 different types of weathering?

A

Freeze-thaw/ physical/ mechanical and Biological and chemical weathering.

18
Q

What is mechanical weathering?

A

It is when physical features crack rocks or erode them.

19
Q

What is Biological weathering?

A

When plants or animals break rocks.

20
Q

What is Chemical weathering?

A

Rainwater and seawater can be weak acids so over time a coastline made up of rocks such as limestone or chalk can become dissolved by the acid in the water.
