Rocking The Cycle Flashcards
Crystal
A solid in which all the atoms are arranged in a regular repeating pattern
Mineral
A naturally occuring inorganic crystalline solid with a characteristic chemical composition. They can be identified by their characteristic physical properties such as crystalline structure, hardness, density, breakage and color
What does each type of mineral have that differ from others?
Physical Properties.
What are some examples of physical properties?
Crystal structure, hardness, density and color.
Give examples of physical properties of minerals
Silver is a soft shiny metal, salt is a white cube shaped crystal, diamond is an extremely hard translucent crystal
What are the characteristics of minerals?
Forms by natural processes, Inorganic Substance, Definite Composition, Solid Crystals, Physical Properties
T/F: A mineral is sometimes created by natural processes
F, a mineral must be created by natural processes
Give examples of how mineral crystals are formed
When hot lava cools or when they precipitate from water. Some minerals also form when rocks are exposed to high pressures and temperature.
Organic Compound
These contain carbon usually bonded to hydrogen: DNA, Protein, Fats, Ethanol, Methane, Carbohydrates
Inorganic Compound
These usually don’t contain carbon: Table Salt, Hydrochloric Acid, Quartz, Carbon Dioxide
Name an exception where a living organism creates an inorganic substance
Sometimes living organisms make inorganic compounds. Ex: Calcium Carbonate(CaCO2) Shells made by marine animals are inorganic.
T/F: Inorganic substances are not made by living organisms
T
T/F: Minerals vary in their chemical makeup
F, All minerals have a definite chemical makeup
Give examples of minerals that are made of one element
Diamond and Graphite
What are minerals that are not made of a single element.
Chemical Compounds
