Allusion
A reference to a well known person, place, or event from history, literature, or religion
Alliteration
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginnings of words
Irony
A contrast or discrepancy between expectation and reality or between what is expected and what actually happens
Situational irony
Occurs when what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected or appropriate
Verbal irony
Occurs when a writer or speaker says one thing but really means the opposite
Dramatic irony
Occurs when the reader or audience knows something that a character does not know
Soliloquy
In drama, a long speech by a character who is alone on the stage. It reveals the private thoughts and emotions of that character
Aside
In a play, a comment that a character makes to the audience that the other characters on stage do not hear
Monologue
A long speech or written expression of thoughts by a character in a literary work
Dramatic structure
The way information is presented in a play (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution)
Blank verse
Five accented syllables (iambic pentameter) per line, with no rhyme
Foil
To interrupt ones success/plan
Contrasting character
Rhyme scheme
The pattern of end rhymes, designated by letters (aabbcc or ababcdcd)
Paradox
A situation or statement that appears to be contradictory but is actually true, either in fact it in a figurative sense
Pun
A play on words

Sonnet
A 14 lyric poem developed in Italy during the Renaissance
Couplet
Two consecutive rhymed lines of poetry that follow the same rhyme pattern
Archetype
A pattern or model that serves as the basis for different, but related, versions of a character, plot, image, or theme
