Rock Vocabulary Flashcards
Crystallization?
The process by which atoms arrange to form a mineral that has a crystal structure.
Cleavage?
A mineral that splits easily along flat surface
Solution
A mixture in which 1 substance is dissolved in another
Vein
A narrow channel or slab of a mineral that is different from the surrounding rock
To study a rock sample?
Mineral comp.
Color
Texture
3 types of rocks
Igneous
Metamorphic
Sedimentary
Igneous rock?
Forms: from cooling magma/lava, the magma hardens underground to form rocks, the magma erupts, cools and hardens to form rocks on the earths surface
Sedimentary rock
Forms: small particles of rock or remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together, they form in layers that are buried below the surface
Metamorphic rock
Forms: a rock is changed by heat and pressure, or by chemical reactions
Most metamorphic rocks form underground
Extrusive rock?
Igneous
Forms when lava erupts on the surface
(Would have air bubbles)
Intrusive rock
Igneous
Forms below the earths surface
Sediment
Small, solid pieces of material that comes from rocks or living things
Weathering/erosion
The effects of freezing and thawing, planting roots, acid and other forces on rocks (after the rock is broken up the fragments are carried away as a result of erosion)
Deposition
The process by which sediment settled out of the water or wind carrying it
Compaction
The process by which sediments presses together
