Rock vocab Flashcards
Compaction
Particles squeezed together under great pressure
Organic
Form from the accumulation of [plant or animal debris which have piled up by compaction and cementation] over long periods of time.
Non-foliated rock
Term used to describe metamorphic rocks that the mineral grains are arranged randomly
Igneous rock
A type of rock that forms from the cooling of molten rock AT or BELOW the surface
Chemical
Form when [standing water] evaporates, leaving dissolved minerals behind over long periods of time
Rock Cycle
A series of processes on the surface and inside Earth that slowly changes rocks from one kind to another
Metamorphic Rock
A type of rock that forms and existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure or chemical reaction
Clastic
Form from an accumulation of [little pieces of broken up rock which have piled up by compaction and cementation] over long periods of time
Deposition
Particles deposited as loosely packed sediment
Sedimentary rock
A type of rock that forms when particles form other rocks or the [remains of plants and animals are pressed and cemented together]
Glacier
A large mass of ice that forms on land and moves slowly across earth’s surface
Minerals
Naturally occurring in organic solids that have crystal structures and definite chemical compositions
Cementation
Particles glued together as mineral solutions harden
Erosion
The process in which sediment is carried away from their source by water and/or wind
Rock
A natural, solid mixture of minerals, smaller ROCK fragments, organic matter or glass
