Rock Identification Flashcards
Crystalline
Made of crystal
Define Texture
“Texture is the term used to describe the physical character of the constituents that make up a rock and how those constituents are arranged, such as whether they are made of interlocking and intergrown crystals or comprise layers of accumulated fragments.”
Fragmental
Made of existing fragments of rock or minerals
Crystalline texture
Minerals have grown together to form a mass of interlocking crystals
“usually harder and stronger than those with a fragmental texture. When they are broken they tend to fracture across crystals, often along mineral cleavage planes, resulting in flat areas on fracture surfaces that reflect and glint as they catch the light.
Fragmental texture
Rocks have been formed by deposition well rounded grains
Igneous rock
Formed from magma crystallisation process volcanic activity
Eg gabbro
Sedimentary rock
Formed from well rounded sedimentary materials
Eg conglomerate greywacke
Metamorphic rock
Formed during intense heat or pressure
Eg gneiss
