Rock Formation Flashcards
What are igneous Rocks?
Igneous rocks are rocks which have formed due to molten that has cooled and become solid.
What are molten rocks referred to as?
Magma.
How are large crystals formed in igneous rocks?
When magma cools slowly instead of quickly.
How are small crystals formed in igneous rocks?
When lava cools quickly instead of slowly.
What are extrusive igneous rocks?
Magma cooled on the surface. Magma cooled quickly. Small crystals. Examples are obsidian and basalt.
What are intrusive igneous rocks?
Magma cooled underground. Magma cooled slowly. Large crystals. Examples are granite and gabbro.
Do igneous rocks contain fossils?
No.
What are sedimentary rocks?
Rocks that are formed from the broken remains of other rocks which join together.
What is the process of sedimentary rocks?
Transport > Deposition > Sedimentation > Compaction > Cementation.
Do sedimentary rocks contain fossils?
Yes.
What fossils do sedimentary rocks contain?
Fossils of the likes of animals and plants.
What are examples of sedimentary rocks?
Chalk, Limestone, Shale and Sandstone.
What are metamorphic rocks?
Metamorphic rocks form from other rocks that change due to heat or pressure.
Do metamorphic rocks contain fossils?
Very rarely, but sometimes they can be present in the original sedimentary rock. However, they may not survive due to heat and pressure.
What is an example of metamorphic rock?
Slate, marble, gneiss.
