Rock Cycle, Soil Formation, GroundWater Flashcards
What is Magma And what role does it have in the rock cycle?
Melted rock deep inside the Earth, it helps recycle rock to form brand new igneous Rocks
What type of rock are fossils found in and explain why
Sedimentary; living organisms on the surface of Earth are buried in sediments that make the rock
What is the difference between intrusive and extrusive igneous rock?
Intrusive form inside the Earth (granite), Extrusive form outside the Earth (pumice & obsidian)
. The process in which sediments are picked up and moved to another place by ice, water, wind, or gravity.
erosion
Part B: Is it a constructive or destructive process?
A constructive process is somthing that builds the world, destructive is when the world lives
What is the difference between mechanical (physical) and chemical weathering, and give examples of each
. Mechanical makes rocks smaller without changing the type of rock, chemical changes the rock into a new substance often causing it to become more brittle
Mechanical EX: abrasion, ice & plant wedging, animal burrowing; Chemical EX: oxidation, carbonic acid, hydrolysis, acid rain
What weathering process occurs when ice freezes in the cracks of rocks, expands, and breaks the rock onto smaller pieces? Is this an example of mechanical or chemical weathering?
Ice wedging ; mechanical
What process can change rocks to a reddish color causing them to become more brittle? Is this physical/mechanical or chemical weathering?
Oxidation ; chemical
List the agents of erosion
water, wind, gravity, glaciers
What does it mean for soil to be porous
It can hold water because it has more holes
What does it mean for soil to be permeable?
Allows more water to pass through the soil
Put the soil type on order from the most permeable to the least permeable
Silt, clay, sand
most permeable: sand, silt, clay : Least permeable
How does precipitation affect the water table?
Greater the amount of precipitation the more water in the water table
What are the 5 factors that affect soil formation, and give a brief description of each
time, Parent rock weathers over time getting smaller to support biota that makes soil
topography, Shape of the land with influence the amount of water 7 sunlight that lead to weather & plant growth
biota, Decomposers (bacteria & mushrooms) speed up the weathering process for soil faster
Parent Material, Materials that is uplifted and weathered to form soil
climate, Soil forms faster in warm moist climate and slower in cold dry climates
Define destructive process and give some examples.
Process that destroy the crust of earth; ex. Weathering, subduction
