Rock cycle Flashcards
Igneous rock
Igneous rocks are formed from the solidification of molten rock.
Sedimentary rock
Sedimentary rocks are formed by the accumulation or deposition of mineral or organic particles at the Earth’s surface followed by cementation.
Metamorphic rock
Metamorphic rocks were once either sedimentary rocks or igneous rocks, they changed from the result of heat and pressure.
Crystallization
Crystallization is the process by which a solid forms.
Lithification
Lithification is the process in which sediments compact under pressure, expel connate fluids, and gradually become solid rock.
Sediment
Sediment is a naturally occuring material that is broken down by the process of weathering and erosion.
Deposition
Deposition is the process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to a landform or landmass.
Weathering
Weathering is the breaking down of rocks, soils, and minerals.
Erosion
The process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents.
