rock and minerals Flashcards
minreal
a naturally formed inorgrang soild that has a crystal outerlayer
rock
.
the solid mineral material forming part of the surface of the earth and other similar planets, exposed on the surface or underlying the soil or oceans.
2.
element
a subtance that cant be seprated or broken down
compund
a substance made up of atoms of two
cyrstal
a soild whose atoms ,ions, or molecules are aranged into defined aparment
color
the property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way the object reflects or emits light.
streak
the color of the powder of minereal
luster
the way in which a mineral reflects light
cleavage
a spiltting of mineral along smooth flat surfaces
fracture
the manner in which a mineral breaks along ehtier curved or irregular surfaces
denisty
the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance
ore
a naturally occurring solid material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be profitably extracted
metillic minerals
Metallic minerals are extracted from mineral deposits, which are concentrations of metallic minerals produced by geological processes.
non matllic minerals
Nonmetallic minerals/ rocks like limestone, magnesite, dolomite, phosphorite, talc, quartz, mica, clay, silica sand, gemstones, decorative and dimension stones, construction materials etc. are the common nonmetallic minerals.
gemstones
a precious or semiprecious stone, especially one cut, polished, and used in a piece of jewelry.
ingoeus rocks
s one of the three main rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
sedimentry rock
Sedimentary rocks are types of rock that are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of that material at the Earth’s surface and within bodies of water.
meatomrphic rock
A metamorphic rock is a result of a transformation of a pre-existing rock. The original rock is subjected to very high heat and pressure, which cause obvious physical and/or chemical changes.
