Rock and fossils Flashcards
Uniformitarianism
Geologic processes that is in the past.
Catastrophism
Principle that states that geologic change occurs suddenly.
Paleontology
Scientific study of fossils.
Relative dating
Method of determining whether an event is older or younger.
Absolute dating
Method of measuring the age of an event or object in years.
Superposition
Younger rocks lie on top of older rocks unless the surface has been disturbed.
Isotope
An atom that has the same number of protons but has a different number of neutrons.
Radioactive decay
Radioactive isotope brakes down into stable isotope.
Half-life
Time needed for half of a sample of radioactive substance to decay.
Fossil
Remains of physical evidence of an organism preserved by geological processes.
Trace fossil
A fossilized mark that is formed in soft sediment
Mold
A mark or cavity made in our sedimentary surface or shell
Cast
A type of fossil that forms when sediments fill a cavity left by decomposed organisms
uniformity
A break in geological record created when rock layers are eroded
Mass extinction
When it wipes out an entire species
