The Grand Tour
traditional trip taken by men of the aristocracy of Europe. Spending years travelling in France and Italy visiting artistic monuments and learning about political history as part of a well-rounded education.
Hôtels
French meaning “townhouse.” An elegant townhouse for a nobleman.
Boiserie
Bois = wood. Carved woodwork of 17th and 18th century French interiors that is often painted or gilded.
Fauteuil
French armchair (fau-toy). An upholstered chair with open sides. Usually with upholstered arms or armpads.
Manchette
French for padded arm cushion.
cabriole leg
- a gently curving furniture leg. A key characteristic in French Rococo furniture (known as the Style of Louis XV).
trumeau mirror
Usually a tall rectangular mirror set into an overmantle or sometimes in the space between windows.
Chinoiserie
– Word describing the European taste for Chinese-like decoration.
vernis Martin
lacquer finish invented by the Martin Brothers during reign of Louis XV. Imitation of Chinese and Japanese lacquer.
bureau en pente
– drop front desk.
Bureau du Roi
– Desk of the King.
Bergère
an all upholstered French armchair. The wood frame is exposed and it has enclosed sides. Also has a loose upholstered seat.
Ébénistes
– French cabinetmakers who specialized in the use of ebony.
