Robotics And Artificial Intelligence Flashcards
What is the definition of a robot?
A re-programmable device designed to both manipulate and transport parts, tools or specialised manufacturing implements through variable programmed motions for the performance of specific manufacturing tasks
Outline the 4 levels of complexity of manufacturing task as for robots
- Applications that can be achieved using a simple robot using jigs and fixtures to position components to achieve required accuracy
- Applications requiring sensory feedback in order for small modification to be made to the program
- Applications require more complex sensory capabilities such as pattern recognition, requiring complex decision making
- Applications involving unpredictable behaviour of either the components or other equipment within manufacturing cells
Give 5 advantages of robots for manufacturing
- Ideal for repetitive, monotonous tasks requiring precision
- Able to carry very heavy loads
- Highly flexible when responding to change
- Cost effective as can operate continually resulting in increased productivity
- Can be used in hazardous environments
Give 5 disadvantages of robots for manufacturing
- Robots do not have as impressive sensors as humans
- Robots do not have to ability to learn and make decisions when data doesn’t exist
- Robotic technology is extremely expensive to purchase
- Maintenance issues as different robots use different control systems
- Robots are not as flexible as humans
If a machine is artificially intelligent what does it exhibit?
Human intelligence and behaviour and can demonstrate the ability to learn and adapt through experience
What is an expert system?
System that can apply reasoning skills to reach a conclusion by processing large amounts of known info and coming to conclusions based on them
What are autonomous robots?
Robots that must be able to manipulate and ‘feel’ objects like humans e.g. Typical robot arm allows six degrees of freedom, a human hand allows over 20 degrees of freedom
