Represents the aftermath of WWI and the Lost Generation, as the veterans searching for purpose. The War is defined as the cause of an amalgamation of different cultures in America, resulting in the ‘Boom’ of the 1920s.

‘everybody i knew was in the bond business’
Nick admires the prosperity of New York, particularly its lucrative financial services industry. He knows little about finances but, as “everybody” else is involved in it, he believes that the “bond business” would be a means of finding prosperity and purpose after WWI.
