Roadcraft Flashcards
What is the system of car control?
The system of car control is a way of approaching and negotiating hazards that is methodical, safe and leaves nothing to chance. It involved careful observation, early anticipation and planning, and a systematic us of the controls to maintain your vehicles stability in all situations. The system of car control increases your safety in a constantly changing driving environment by giving you time to react to hazards.
What are the 4 phases of the system of car control?
Information
Position-speed-gear Acceleration
Main benefit of using the system?
Gives you more time to react
What is a hazard?
Anything that is an actual or potential danger. It is useful to think in terms of three types of hazard.
- Physical features
Junctions – bends – road surface - The position or movement of other road users
Drivers – cyclists – pedestrians - Weather conditions
Icy road – poor visibility
What 2 things should you ask yourself regarding the processing of information?
- What information do I need to gather about the road conditions, the behaviour of other road users and actual and potential dangers?
- What do other road users need to know about my intentions?
What is tug?
TAKE
USE
GIVE
(Information)
Mnemonic that reminds you about taking, using and giving information when drivin
When should you signal?
When it benefits other road users.
What should you do before considering changing position or speed?
Use your mirrors to check what is happening in front, to the sides and behind you
How should you position yourself to deal with a hazard?
Position yourself so you can negotiate the hazard(s) safely and smoothly
How should you adjust your speed to deal with a hazard?
Adjust your speed as necessary.
Make good use of acceleration sense if appropriate
When should you engage the appropriate gear?
Once you have the correct speed for the circumstances
How much acceleration should you use to pass the hazard?
The correct degree of acceleration to negotiate and leave the hazard safely
What are the situations where braking and gear change may overlap
1) Going downhill
2) Sharp left/right turn with a vehicle close behind or approaching
3) Low speed turns into left and right junctions with a vehicle close behind or approaching
The purpose of the plan?
To put you…
In the correct position
At the correct speed
With the correct gear engaged
At the correct time
In order to negotiate hazards safely and efficiently
Safe stopping distance rule
Always drive so you can stop safely within the distance you can see to be clear on your own side of the road
