Who fought in the French and Indian War?
France fought against Britain for land west of the Appalachian Mountains
What were the advantages for each side?
France- Native American allies, only one government gave orders, set up ambushes.
Britain- More skilled troops, had militias, could grow their own food
Who was winning at the beginning of the war?
France.
How did Britain gain control?
Many Native Americans died from smallpox and Britain’s leadership changed.
How did the war end?
Britain seized an important fort. France surrendered and signed the Treaty of Paris in 1763
What were the results of the war?
Britain not only had control of 13 colonies, but now they had Canada and the eastern half of the Louisiana Territory. France no longer owned any land in America.
Effects of the French and Indian war:
Britain’s King George lll and the Parliament taxed the colonists to pay for the expenses.
Proclamation of 1763:
British law banning settlements west of the Appalachian Mountains because Britain wanted to please the Native Americans, and because they didn’t want to send British troops to help protect the colonies from the Native Americans.
Quartering Act:
British law forcing colonists to feed and house British soldiers whenever the soldiers wanted.
Stamp Act:
Britain placed taxes on all printed material in the colonies.
What phrase united the colonies?
“No taxation without representation!”
Why did Sam Adams found the Sons of Liberty?
Sam Adams wanted freedom to have the colonies make their own laws so they lead protests against the taxes and put pressure on the stamp agents.
Townshend Act:
British law that imposed taxes on all imported goods.
What was the effect of the Townshend act?
A boycott that had colonists refusing to buy goods.
What were the roles of colonial women?
Mercy Otis Warren(a writer) encouraged the boycott and they made their own tea. Daughters of Liberty was formed and they began weaving cloth instead of buying the British wool.
