Fredonian Rebellion

A

In early 1827, Edwards and his supporters declared independence from Mexico after the land disputes and the land near Nacogdoches became the Fredonian Republic. This happened because the Mexican Government revoked Edwards land grant and said he had to leave.

Mier y Teran Report

A

In 1829, Mier y Teran was sent to Texas to inspect settlements and report back. He reported that American settlers outnumbered Mexican settlers 10 to 1. He recommended that the government place more troops in Texas, attract more Mexican settlers to Texas, and increase trade between Mexico and Texas.

Law of April 6th

A

In response to Mier y Teran’s report, Mexico created The Law of April 6th, 1830. This made immigrants from the U.S. banned, all empresario contracts that aren’t complete, are canceled, encouraged Mexican and European immigration, outlawed slavery in Texas, added more Mexican soldiers/forts in Texas, and added duties to all foreign good entering Texas. Texans were furious when they heard about this.

Centralist Party

A

Centralists came to power in 1829. They were more strict on colonists. They wanted a central government to have more control. An example of this would be the Law of April 6th, 1830. The Centralists take over in Mexico and Texas does not like it.

Federalist Party

A

Federalists came to power in the 1820s. They left colonists alone and wanted states to have more control. An example of this would be the Constitution of 1824. Although this was the old government, Texas still likes it.

Stephen F. Austin

A

The first empresario in Texas. Nicknamed “the Father of Texas.” He was sent to deliver the request changes from the convention. He sent a letter to Texas suggesting a temporary state government be set up. When Mexican officials found out about the letter he was imprisoned for a year. Prior to being in jail, he feared that Santa Anna was becoming a dictator. Was also the first commander of the Army of the People.

Turtle Bayou Resolutions

A

In 1832 at Turtle Bayou, they pledged their allegiance to the Mexican Federalists. They also said their actions were against Bradburn, not Mexico. They stated their loyalty to Santa Anna. This happened because Bradburn had two lawyers put in jail for spreading false rumors. Later, a group of 200 angry settlers arrived, demanding their release.

Battle of Velasco

A

John Austin got a cannon. Ugartecha attempted to stop him and a fight broke out. The Mexican army ran out of ammunition and Ugartecha was forced to surrender.

Santa Anna

A

In the summer of 1832, Anastasio Bustamante agreed to resign as president of Mexico. Santa Anna was elected president in March of 1833. When Sanat Anna became president, he knew that he had power so he was becoming a dictator.

battle of Gonzales
The first Battle of the Texas Revolution, also known as the Lexington of Texas. In 1835 Mexico demanded that the Texans give up all their weapons including a small cannon. So the Texans made the "Come and take it" flag, and fired the cannon at the Mexican soldiers. The Mexican soldiers retreated.

Consultation of 1835
On November 3, 1835, delegates from around Texas met to decide an important question. Should they seek independence from Mexico or find federalists allies in Mexico? This was between the War party and the peace party. The peace party won and the final consultation declared their support for the constitution of 1824, sated they were loyal to Mexico, and blamed Santa Anna for the fighting.

Victories at Gonzales and Goliad increased Texas confidence, leading to the organization of the Army of the People. Stephan F. Austin was made commander of this army

Grass fight
Erastus Smith warned Texans that Mexicans were smuggling supplies and silver into San Antonio. When Texas attacked the train, it only contained grass to feed the Mexican horses. This shows that they have no supplies and the siege has worked!

Battle of San Antonio
In 1835, Ben Milam convinced the Texans it was time to attack. The fighting only lasted 4 days and only 2 Texans were killed. The attack was successful and General Cos was forced to surrender.

was a man who was given a land grant that allowed him to settle 800 families in Nacogdoches. When he arrived, he discovered people where already living on it.
