French and Indian War
Between Britain and France from 1754 to 1763 for colonial dominance in North America (American colonists alongside british soldiers) vs (French with Native American tribes). The British won capturing most of France’s major cities and forts.
Salutary neglect
End the age of “hands off policy” of England towards its colonies and attempt to raise money from colonies to pay for the war.
Navigation Acts of 1764
Sugar Act - tax sugar, Currency Act - remove paper currencies 1765 Stamp Act - tax on printed materials, Quartering Act - required Americans to house and feed British troops
Taxation without Representation
Stamp Act in Congress in New York to petition Parliament and King George 3 to repeal the tax
Declaratory Act
Parliament reserved the right to tax the colonies anytime it chose
Townshend Duties
Another series of taxes on lead, paints, and tea.
Boston Massacre
March 5, 1770, an angry mob clashed with British troops. 5 colonists died.
Tea Act
granting financially troubled British East India Company a trade monopoly on the tea exported to the American colonies
Boston Tea Party
sixty men boarded ships, disguised as Native Americans, and dumped the entire shipment of tea into the harbor
Coercive Acts
aka Intolerable Acts which shut down Boston Harbor
Quebec Act
more rights to French Canadian Catholics and extended French Canadian territory south to western
First Continental Congress
autumn of 1774 once petitioned the Parliament, King George 3, and the British people to repeal the acts and restore friendly relations
Battle of Lexington and Concord
April 19, 1775, Boston marched to the nearby town of Concord, Massachusetts to seize a colonial militia arsenal. Lexington and Concord intercepted and attacked. “shot heard round the world”
Second Continental Congress
Chose George Washington to command the militiamen besieging Boston in the north.
The Declaration of Independence
voted on July 2, 1776, to declare their independence. Thomas Jefferson drafted it.
