Road deactivation Flashcards
3 levels of Deactivation?
1) Temporary 3 years
3) Permanent - Road is never needed again
Road Deactivation - What is the thought?
Think of deactivation as setting up the road so that maintenance and the chance of washout/or slides is minimized
What are objectives to deactivating roads? (7)
- Maintain or re-establish natural hill slope drainage patterns
- minimize the potential for road -related landslides and erosions
- Re-establish slope angles to be stable
- Enhance productive growing sites
- minimize maintenance for in active roads
- Decrease the cost to reactivate when needed
- minimize impact on the environment
What are the water management principles?
- Never combine watercourses
- Always work from upslope to downslope
- Do not create slope instability
- Avoid disturbing sensitive soils
- Maintain water quality
- Do not introduce debris or sediment into watercourse
- Keep water flows wide and shallow to reduce erosive energy
What is erosion protection?
Diameter of the particle that can be moved is proportional to the square of the water velocity
Define elements of Risk?
The likelihood of damage to a social, economic or forest resource that is exposed to a hazard like erosion or sedimentation
Two components of the elements of risk?
1) the likelihood or probability of hazards occurring
2) The consequence or severity of damage if the hazard occurs
Define mass wasting
Predominant mode of sediment transport from roads e.g.) landslides
Hazard ratings?
Hazard ratings forecast the chance of a landslide occurring by identifying the terrain that is naturally unstable or likely to become unstable
