The Theca, meaning “shell” of a follicle is divided into two layers. Name them and their function.
Interna provides blood supply
Externa provides a very fibrous outer layer.
What is the most common follicle type?
Primordial. They contain the primary oocyte.
What cell shape are follicular cells in the primordial follicle?
Squamous.
What cell shape are follicular cells in the Primary Oocyte?
Cuboidal, stratified. - They are also now called Granulosa cells.
What main structure defines the secondary oocyte?
The Antrum, with multilayered follicular cells.
Where are secondary oocytes found?
Deep within the cortex.
The Theca Interna is rich in blood supply. What is the significance of these blood vessels?
For immediate secretion of androgens to the blood stream.
