RNA and DNA Vocabulary Flashcards
Chromosomes
threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passed from one generation to the next.
Double Helix
The twisted ladder structure of DNA.
Nitrogen Bases
Molecules that contain nitrogen and other elements that makes up the rungs (middle section) of DNA.
Adenine
One of the 4 nitrogen bases that makes up the rungs of the DNA; Its abbreviation is A
Thymine
One of the 4 nitrogen bases that makes up the rungs of the DNA; Its abbreviation is T
Guanine
One of the 4 nitrogen bases that makes up the rungs of the DNA; Its abbreviation is G
Cytosine
One of the 4 nitrogen bases that makes up the rungs of the DNA; Its abbreviation is C
Gene
A section of a DNA molecule that contains the information to code for one specific protein.
DNA Replication
The process in which an identical copy of a DNA strand is formed for a new cell.
RNA
Ribonucleic acid; the genetic messenger that carries the genetic code from DNA inside the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
Uracil
A nitrogen base found in RNA instead of thymine; abbreviated U
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
