RNA Flashcards
Describe the structure of RNA
Consists of a ribose sugar, phosphate and nitrogen containing bases
Where is RNA found?
In the cytoplasm
What is a key role of cytoplasm?
Key role in proteinsynthesis
What are the differences between DNA and RNA?
- DNA contains the pentose sugar deoxyribose, whilst RNA contains the pentose sugar ribose
- RNA has uracil (U) instead of thymine (T)
- polynucleotide is usually single stranded
State the function of RNA
RNA is used to transfer genetic information from the DNA to the ribosomes
What does RNA stand for?
Ribonucleic acid
What are the three different types of RNA?
(messenger RNA) mRNA
(Transfer RNA) tRNA
(Ribosomal RNA) rRNA
What is the function of mRNA?
A copy of genetic code for one protein and takes code to the ribosome
What is the function of tRNA?
Delivers amino acids to the ribosome to form a polypeptide
What is the function of rRNA?
Forms part of the ribosome
