RNA Flashcards
What does RNA stand for?
Ribonucleic acid
What is RNA?
Short-lived molecule
Single-stranded polynucleotide
Where can RNA be found?
In the cytoplasm of the cell
In the nucleus
What do RNA contain?
Pentose sugar (ribose)
One of the four organic nitrogenous bases
What are the 4 organic nitrogenous bases found in RNA?
Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
Uracil
What is the function of RNA?
Protein synthesis
What are the 3 types of RNA?
mRNA
tRNA
rRNA
What is mRNA?
Single-stranded molecules that carries the genetic code for a specific protein from DNA in the nucleus to ribosomes in the cytoplasm
What is tRNA?
Transfers specific amino acids to the ribosome
Single RNA strand forms a cloverleaf shape help together by hydrogen-bonds between certain base pairs
What is rRNA?
This, together with protein, forms a large complex molecule (a ribosome)
Ribosomes translate the genetic code and join amino acids together to form polypeptides
