What are the indications/advantages of implants?

A
  • Spaced dentitions – if patient wants to keep spaces within their teeth then bridges are contraindicated as retainer will need to be attached to adjacent tooth/ teeth
  • Avoids tooth preparation
  • Avoids RBB retainer shine through
  • Avoids denture problems – e.g. deep overbite

What are the disadvantages of implants?

A
  • Possible damage
  • Aesthetic challenges especially with the gingivae overlying the implant
  • Lengthy treatment (Aesthetic zone – 8 visits and Non-aesthetic zone – 4 visits)
  • Implants non bio-responsive – can’t move with ortho
  • Cost
