Q

Outline what is meant by permiability

A

Proteins sitting in the membrane allow ions to pass through. Gates block the flow of ions, changes in voltage opens the gates:

  • Sets RMP
  • Generates AP

Q

Outline what is meant by concentration gradient

A

Ion pumps maintain concentration gradient, the Na+ K pump exchanges 3 internal Na+ ions for 2 external K+ ions due to ATP
Sodium in, potassium out

Q

Outline what is meant by electrical gradient

A

Ions are electrically charged, so opposites attract.

Glial cells are selectively permeable to K+ at rest, they have high K+ inside which diffuses the CG out of the cell.
