RMP Flashcards
What is RMP?
The difference in electrical charge across the membrane at rest
What ions are involved?
Na+, K+, Cl-
What are the three factors that mean electrical charge is distributed unevenly?
1) Permiability
2) Concentration gradient
3) Electrical gradient
Outline what is meant by permiability
Proteins sitting in the membrane allow ions to pass through. Gates block the flow of ions, changes in voltage opens the gates:
- Sets RMP
- Generates AP
Outline what is meant by concentration gradient
Ion pumps maintain concentration gradient, the Na+ K pump exchanges 3 internal Na+ ions for 2 external K+ ions due to ATP
Sodium in, potassium out
Outline what is meant by electrical gradient
Ions are electrically charged, so opposites attract.
Glial cells are selectively permeable to K+ at rest, they have high K+ inside which diffuses the CG out of the cell.
What is the nerst equation?
A way to figure out the equilibrium potential
