Subsistence farming
Farming in which only enough food to feed one’s family is produced
cash crop

overseer
Person who supervises a large operation or its workers.
Middle Passage
the sea journey undertaken by slave ships from West Africa to the West Indies.
indentured servant
Laborer who agreed to work without pay for a certain period of time in exchange for passage to America.
apprentice
Assistant who is assigned to learn the trade of a skilled craftsman.
triangular trade
A trade route that exchanged goods between the West Indies, the American colonies, and West Africa.
debtor
Person or country that owes money.
boycott
to refuse t buy items from a particular country (p.134); to refuse to use in order to show disapproval or force acceptance of one’s terms
repeal
to cancel an act or law
propaganda
ideas or information designed and spread to influence opinion
militia
a group of civilian trained to fight in emergencies (pp. 118, 142)
loyalist
American colonists who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence (p. 145)
patriots
American colonists who were determined to fight the British until American independence was won (p. 145)
mercenary
paid solder who serves in the army of a foreign country (p. 164)
